Most people remember Frankincense and Myrrh as two of the three gifts the three wise men (Magi) delivered to the baby Jesus. Myrrh was also used to anoint Jesus' body after the crucifiction. Myrrh was also used in Ancient Egypt for embalming the bodies of Pharaohs. Frankincense has been used in India to make incense for worship.
I have been researching and teaching myself more about the essential oils I use and I found myself revisiting my interest in these resins. The first time I bought these resins I was in high school. I remember being so absorbed by the smell, and the look of the Myrrh. One of my favorite smells from when I was younger was the smell of the incense at church.
Frankincense and Myrrh grow as small trees or shrubs; they are of the botanical family Burseraceae. Frankincense and Myrrh are actually resins (sap) that are created by deliberately wounding (or tapping) the shrub. The liquid that comes out of the tap hardens from exposure to air. These droplets are sometimes called "tears,". The tears are easily detached about two weeks later.
